Amazing Little Parlor Games Volumes 1-9

Hello everybody.

First let me apologize for the lack of activity on this blog. Thanks for the kind words and for taking time to actually read this. Making the blog took a toll on me, and hence the lack of contributions for the last year or so. That said, I would like to offer the following post to say "I'm sorry."

When I decided to start making the Amazing Little Parlor Games compilations 7 years ago, I had no idea that it would evolve to NINE volumes (so far), feature 145 songs and would have a supposed impact on the way Vic released his music. I was flattered when he would ask me for the comps, and I was more than happy to oblige. I did not expect that eventually over 20 of these tracks would be recorded and put out for the world to hear.

Whether or not I had any impact in that I don't know for sure, but Vic did tell me that he sent "live versions" of some of these songs to his producers and that the song choices for the albums came from that. I like to think that perhaps they were from these comps. Maybe not, but to be sure, he was always very happy to get them.
Nine volumes in and there still may be enough unreleased material for a few more sets. Vic was prolific, to say the least.

I have taken the time to 'remaster' the 9 previous volumes, and have decided to upload them for everyone to be able to have for themselves. These remasters were done in order to upgrade quality, to speed correct, to replace with superior versions, and in general just to clean them up to the best possible sound that they could be. The songs deserve it, and so does Vic. These should be considered the definitive versions.

I hope that everyone will take time to download, enjoy, share and leave comments. Some changes have been made since the initial sets were offered and the most accurate and up to date info is below. Song titles have been changed to reflect the proper titles and in incidents where the song was eventually released, that information has been noted.

Feel free to critique, criticize, praise and compare all you want. I would like to see some dialogue regarding these songs and have this blog be more active in discussions and proactive in keeping Vic's music alive. The more interest that there is in the man and his music, the more likely hood for future releases, at least that is my hope.

  1. Thanks for all the great work Charles! Personally, I am not sure how to make more people interested in Vic's music though... I have failed miserably so far trying to convince friends to listen to his songs and basically given up on playing his records to other people. As much as I would want to make his songwriting skill become known to a broader audience, I just don't see it happening. Hope I am wrong....

  2. a genuine treasure trove of stuff here! am really enjoying the cover of hang on sloopy, much to my surprise - a genuine base metal into gold transformation there.

was very interested to see mention of the cancelled vibratile nerves and preachy projects - what's the backstory there charles?

Be aware that the artwork has not been revised since these sets have been updated so there may be some discrepancies.

    Thanks!

  7. I'm glad I checked back--and really happy to see these files here but divshare is apparently saying the account has exceeded its bandwidth or whatever and can't be accessed till after aug.7-- not sure if you know that.

I'm hoping to be able to download these wonderful collections then. Regardless, I'm so glad to see activity on this site.

  8. Well now it says that the files can't be accessed until Aug 13. I signed up for divshare and it says I can download some files, but it won't download. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm not impressed with divshare.

  9. Hi again,
has anyone tried a paid divshare account? Will they let you download then? No luck so far.

  10. Well I did finally manage to dl most of what I wanted. Divshare is kind of a pain but no pain no gain, I guess. And sorry for all the posts that were basically me whining. But mostly, I wanted to say I appreciate your generosity in posting these, thanks so much.

  11. All I can say is WOW!!
Finding these recordings is just what I needed..
A thousand Thanks couldn't describe my excitement uincovering this nine volume masterpiece.. Truly appreciated...
    .

I think regardless of who is listening, Vic has a wide rabid audience and any release would be a genuine find... a guaranteed classic... A little patience goes a long way, but it makes sense when things aren't what they seem to give people the strength to carry on.. no matter what the pain...
    .
I am forever grateful for your stance in keeping the life of Vic alive and well..
the one thing music brings to all of us is eternity.. an abyss of lost thoughts and cloudy memories..
    .
I hope more rleases are in the works for not only new releases, but more remasters like New West did with all the bonus tracks.. Or even a box set of rarities...
The interest is all around us..

    Again, Thanks!!

  12. I found this blog, via Southern Shelter, shortly after Vic died, and it’s been a source of joy and comfort. I missed it when it fell silent, but never has any blog post made me happier than this one. I thank you sincerely and excessively for all of the work you do helping to preserve and promote Vic’s legacy. He’s truly deserving and, there being no obvious payoff in it, you’re kind of at the forefront of that effort. If you’re ever down New Orleans way, you eat and drink gratis.

I’m sorry to hear some of the other commenters have trouble getting folks to appreciate Vic. I’ve had no such trouble. I must have at least a dozen friends who now know and appreciate the best songwriter of the past 20 years. I always mention Vic in class (I teach college writing), I’ve used him as an aid, and I usually have one or three students per class who later confess they looked him up and love him.

Thanks again, Charles, for all of your hard work, for helping Vic, for gifting this to his fans, and for being a seemingly genuine cool guy. Now please, I don’t want to seem ungrateful, but what do we have to do to get the Buddha in a Raincoat series up?!?

p.s. Acquiring this collection was not easy one-click downloading, but it works and that’s all that matters.

  13. What treasure you've shared with us, Charles. Thank you so much for your generosity. The blog and the recordings are a beautiful tribute.

  14. So many thanks from France ! For your work, for beeing here for Vic, for sharing all this with us.
The sounds are awesome, your words so helpful to have a better understanding of the Vic's so complex universe. The huge blank is a little smaller.

Your work would deserve a superb boxset made by a respectful label !

But you made my appetite grow... How to get the Buddha in a Raincoat serie ?

    Thanks again !

  15. I am quite literally floored by the breadth and quality of these recordings. This collection is fantastic and a must for any Vic devotee.

A thousand thank-yous for your arduous and ardent labours. I raise a little libation to you and Vic.

  16. You are very welcome. Thanks for checking this out. I am working on a new volume of this set, and hopefully it will be ready by Christmas. Also, I've decided to revisit this blog, so updates are forthcoming.

I am glad there is still interest in Vic and his music.

  17. I've just stumbled on this amazing piece of work and being heavily into Vic's music at the moment I wanted to download the tracks immediately. My question is: are the links down or am I doing something wrong?

  18. I found this site by accident while I was researching BRUTE and would like to thank you for the 9 volumes of Vic, not what I would play back-to-back but something to dip into on weekends. I saw Vic twice when he visited Oldham (near Manchester) UK, unusual for any American to visit it once let alone twice!
I saw him play solo at a cellar bar called Jackson's Pit around 1996 I think and with a band in a pub called the Castle in May 2005, never to be forgotton.
    Thank you again
    Tom (Oldham Greater Manchester UK)

  19. Thank you so much for this! It breaks my heart that one of the best, original songwriters of the last 20 years still hasn't been more vindicated! I met Vic 2009 and made an ass out of myself and I'm sure Vic hated me, but he was such a sweet curmudgeon! God, I miss the little f@#*%r!

  24. The location for track 2 on volume 7 was San Luis Obispo, CA not St Louis. That was the college station I worked at and my friend John King did the interview. Sadly I missed both Vic in the studio and the show he played at a small downtown bar as I had not yet discovered him yet. I think I was told I should go, but missed out.
